Alert: Zeranol

I learned of Zeranol while listening to breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Kristi Funk, talk about it while relating environmental hormones to breast cancer.

It turns out that conventionally-raised cattle get a zeranol implant placed behind their ear to make them grow fat really fast so they can offer the marbled meat that the general public seeks in their beef.

Zeranol is the most potent synthetic estrogen lookalike ever created and it’s wreaking havoc on our health. The only countries that still allow for its use are the U.S. and Canada. As a matter of fact, the EU bans all imported meat from both of these countries. That should tell you something right there. The EU has banned over 1,000 harmful substances that the U.S. still uses.

Back in 1979, Italian boys and girls between the ages of 3-10 started sprouting breasts. It took awhile to figure it out but Zeranol was found to be the culprit and it was banned from the EU in 1989. I have a feeling that if we compared plant-based boys and girls to “standard American diet” kids of the same age, we would see similar things. Are we just SO used to seeing unhealthy children that we don’t even recognize it? One has to wonder.

Zeranol is an endocrine disruptor that’s 100x more estrogenic than the plastic chemical BPA. It’s been shown to turn normal breast cells into cancer cells, with obese women being at an even greater risk.

A study in New Jersey showed that 78.5% of girls aged 10-12 have Zeranol in their urine. Remember, this is an estrogen-like synthetic hormone that NO child of that age should have in his/her system.

The Nurses Health Study, a large study following 120,000 women aged 30-55 starting back in 1976 and still ongoing, found that women who ate the most meat in adolescence had a 38% increase in premenopausal breast cancer.

In today’s world, we talk about environmental toxins. How about if we look at the food that we eat everyday that could activate those environmental toxins as opposed to foods, like plants with phytonutrients, that have the potential to neutralize toxins. And, eating a plant-based diet, devoid of animal products, will assure that we won’t be getting these synthetic hormones or any other hormones or medications unknowingly in our diet.

Besides, eating a diversity of plants will get us all we need (Vitamin D3 and B12 are the exceptions); including but not limited to: carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and water. Plant foods build not only our immune system but also our resiliency towards environmental toxins as well as cancer, autoimmune disease and all disease in general.
